First off, we would like to clarify the fact that we have not yet watched this film, Fellini Satyricon. This is just a commentary on what we feel to be severe narcissism on the part of director Federico Fellini based solely on what we have read on the VHS slipcover for the movie.
(Please reference scanned material as needed throughout the discussion.)
To begin, let us simply observe that Fellini's name appears a whopping 14 times on the box (three of which are on the sides and top), and that he manages to quote himself three times. Also, we will point out that our initial impression was that the movie was titled simply: Satyricon with Fellini's name appearing for the purpose of securing the patronage of "Fellini fans". Little did we know that Fellini had actually decided to place his own name in the official title of his own movie. This would lead one to believe that the movie is about a character by the name of Fellini, where in reality, it is actually about Nero... or so says the box. (Remember, we haven't actually watched the movie to confirm this.)
Also, why does Fellini quote himself right on the cover of the video? "There is no end, no beginning. There is only the infinite passion of life." -FELLINI Brilliant. Would it have been out of the question to quote, perhaps, someone else? And if Fellini thinks himself to be such a prize, why are there not more quotes from other people talking about how great he is? And the one quote that isn't by him is from some guy from the LA Times. Why should we listen to this guy? Didn't anyone other than Fellini and this "Charles Champlin" fellow like the movie enough to supply a quote? Does it not also seem a little pretentious that there is a piece of text on the back that reads, "Rome. Before Christ. After Fellini."? Does Fellini actually feel justified listing himself next to as important a historical figure as Christ or as significant as the Roman Empire? And if so, why?...Because he made a movie?......Well, I suppose that is somewhat comprable to one of earths greatest empires......and Jesus. Oh Fellini... By the way, we aren't quite sure, but we feel pretty strongly that the man pictured on the cover is probably not an actor from the film at all, but actually Fellini. I'm sure Fellini is upset that he even has to share the cover with the woman next to him. That is why he looks so angry.
If you have any comments regarding the Fellini Satyricon box, feel free to mail us. Whatever suits your fancy. Check back soon for a possible commentary on the actual film, and whether or not it is full of Fellini's self praise.
We hate you, Fellini. God, how we hate you.
